These biases, far from being mere psychological curiosities, have significant implications, often marking the difference between success and failure. In Europe, where corporate culture is shaped by a complex interplay of historical, social, and economic influences, understanding these biases is crucial.

However, the study of cognitive biases is not without controversy. While the heuristics-and-biases programme, pioneered by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, has dominated the field by portraying these biases as inherent flaws in human reasoning (Kahneman and Tversky, 1974; Kahneman, 2011), this perspective has faced significant criticism. Gerd Gigerenzer, a leading critic, argues that many of these so-called biases may, in fact, be adaptive strategies that work well in certain real-world contexts (Gigerenzer and Selten, 2001; Gigerenzer, 2018). This article explores the complex landscape of cognitive biases, integrating both traditional views and Gigerenzer’s critiques, and examines their manifestations in leadership, decision making, and team dynamics within European corporations.
